At one Bayer site, the supply and disposal of materials is handled using 45 truck trailers and two trucks that shuttle between production and storage facilities. Currently, the organization of these logistical processes is carried out manually using lists and phone calls, which means the status of the assets is not known in real time—presenting significant potential for optimization.
With automatic notifications triggered when a trailer arrives at a facility, the next process step (loading or pickup) could be initiated without delay. In addition, this would make it possible to conduct productivity analyses to evaluate trailer utilization and optimize the fleet accordingly.
The requirements for the IoT device include a compact size, long battery life, resistance to outdoor conditions and physical impacts, as well as easy and non-damaging installation on the asset. Additionally, it is important that the devices can be configured remotely to allow for quick and easy adaptation to changing conditions (e.g., shift schedule changes).
Data transmission must occur in real time and ensure seamless coverage across the entire site. Encrypted communication is essential to guarantee secure and tamper-proof data transfer.
SLOC was able to provide the following information using the SLOC Tracker:
The SLOC Tracker (STR) detects the movement of the trailer and determines its current position via the GNSS satellite navigation system once the movement has ended (i.e., when the object comes to a stop after being in motion). This data is then immediately transmitted via cellular network to the SLOC Cloud and, via API, also integrated into a Bayer-specific dashboard.
The SLOC geozone feature generates a push email to the responsible employees as soon as a tracker enters its assigned geofence. This automates the notification process for loading or unloading within the plant.

Bayer AG equipped and tracked 15 trailers with SLOC devices in an initial six-month test phase, and additionally automated the notification of a trailer’s arrival. With the use of SLOC devices, the position of the trailers can be checked at any time.
As a result, search efforts by both fleet managers and customers are eliminated. This enables better fleet management, optimized planning of upcoming tasks, and data-based invoicing. Customers can react quickly upon receiving information about trailer arrivals, thereby reducing waiting times.
In addition, the collected data can be used to evaluate trailer utilization and trip frequency. This also provides a basis for optimizing collaboration with service providers at the site.
